报告题目:Lumped damage mechanics for structural engineering

    报告地点:曲江校区西一楼四楼第二会议室

       间:2017-10-19(周四)下午14:00-15:00

  Julio教授简介:

Prof. Julio is a specialist in mechanics applied to civil engineering structures. His main accomplishment is the development of a new branch of the structural mechanics called Lumped Damage Mechanics. This theory is an adaptation of the fracture and damage mechanics to the analysis of frames, arches and rings. Lumped Damage Mechanics can be applied to RC structures and steel structures. He also have contributions on the Localization Theory, Boundary Element Methods and innovative variational formulations.

He was the leader of an interdisciplinary group that developed a web-based nonlinear finite element programs for the analysis of frames subjected to earthquake loadings, probably the first of its class. The term “Cloud Computing” was not yet used at that time.

He have been visiting professor at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, Spain, University of Paris VI, France, University of São Paulo, Brazil, and University of Kyoto, Japan. These stays were financed by National Science Foundations or Universities of those Countries. Another NSF cooperation program with Rutgers University, USA, was also developed under mi coordination for the Venezuelan part. All these collaborations concluded with the publication of papers in high impact journals of Structural Engineering and Applied Mechanics

报告内容简介:

The analysis and prediction of the failure of structures is one of the main goals of the engineering science. The theoretical tools available for this purpose are the theory of plasticity, fracture mechanics and damage mechanics. Those frameworks, especially the last ones, are mainly applied in the context of continuum mechanics. However, the general tridimensional approach is unsuitable for most applications in civil and offshore engineering. The structures in these fields are often too complex. It is not only a matter of computer costs, which are still determinant; the most important aspect of the problem is that data input and transformation of numerical analyses into engineering decisions are not automatic procedures, they are human activities. The theory of plasticity became the most powerful analytical tool in civil engineering applications only with the incorporation of the plastic hinge concept. Instead of the huge amount of data of a continuum plasticity analysis, frame theories with plastic hinges give compact and meaningful results of easy processing, ideal for practical applications. Lumped damage mechanics (LDM) is the result of following the same approach for fracture and damage mechanics. The plastic hinge concept, when it is generalized with ideas from fracture mechanics and damage mechanics, becomes an inelastic hinge in a broad sense. It is then possible to compute generalized energy release rates or stress intensity factors for inelastic hinges. Fundamental laws such as Griffith criteria, high cycle and low cycle fatigue classic laws, local buckling and other concepts can be lumped at the inelastic hinges. In summary, LDM is the fracture mechanics of complex structures.
